An Adventure Through The Memory Garden

Bunny here at the keyboard, writing about my Saturday adventure.

Dad and Küster had training all day on Saturday which is our usual day for adventure.  I have really been enjoying walking Mom every night, but I told her that we needed to get out and see some different scenery, even if we weren’t going to go to some faraway, interesting place to hike.  There are some places close to us that we enjoy going to, and the day was too pretty to waste inside.  Especially since Sunday Mom had to go for a party about a human puppy and the weather was supposed to be more wicked than a witch’s heart.

Geese on the Illinois RiverMom also had an errand she needed to run over in Peoria, so we decided to walk along Riverfront Park.  It’s a favorite place of ours, and Dad and Morgan don’t seem to enjoy it as much as we do, so we made it our destination.  I am awfully glad we decided to go for our walk there.

The Spirit of PeoriaOne of the things we like about the Rock Island Pimeteoui Trail is that while it’s a part of the city of Peoria, it is also like walking out in nature like when we’re at one of the parks we love.  It’s the best blend of taking a stroll down the street and enjoying a hike in the woods.  There are almost always other people and dogs on the trail when we go.  We saw quite a few on Saturday, probably because the weather was so nice.

Icarus AscendingWhen you walk on the trail, first you walk through the riverfront area, which is really nice.  There are some restaurants and the Gateway Building.  After that, you walk under the Murray Baker Bridge and past the Riverplex, which is a place where humans go to exercise inside.  I’m not sure why they would want to exercise inside without dogs, and pay green paper for it, but humans can be a mystery.  I’m glad my human prefers to exercise outside with me for free.

After you pass the Riverplex, you enter the Memory Garden and the Dan Fogelberg memorial.  The Memory Garden is for people to remember loved ones who died from Alzheimer’s disease.  There are lots of pretty rocks along the way that tell about humans who have been loved and lost.  There are also rocks that have lyrics from Mr. Fogelberg’s songs.  My humans aren’t huge fans of his music, but we do love the words he put together.

We also saw the Constitution Garden, which looks neat right now, but we think it will be much prettier in the spring and summer when the flowers are in bloom.  I told Mom that we have to come back there for pictures.  It’s a perfect picture spot.

The Constitution GardenAs we were walking along, we saw a feather.  We read a while back that a feather means someone in Heaven is thinking of you.  I don’t know if it was Mom’s grandma, Treat, Hawk or Lilac who sent it, but it did make us contemplate those we’ve loved who aren’t with us anymore for a while.  I’d like to think that one of them sent us that perfect day to remember them by.

Feather From HeavenSoon, we were back at the car and it was time to go to the dog bakery and head home.  A trip to the dog bakery definitely means the day ended on a perfect note.  I am glad that we are able to appreciate the beauty that’s right under our noses in new and different ways as the seasons come and go.  It was a day to make beautiful memories and we made the most of it.

  1. What a wonderful walk. I agree that a stop at the dog bakery makes a lot of sense.

  2. Now I love to go to the bakery and its not so far from the library so often Mom will take me there. My favorite treat is a peanut butter cookie, or a doughnot h ole with pink frosteen on it. What is your favorite treat from the bakery, Bunny? All I get is one thing and my Mom gets a loaf of wild rice bread.

Your walk was very nice. I wish we had nicer weather like you do.

  3. That sure looks like a beautiful day spent with your mom. And I agree about the peeps going to a gym. With that said, my MOM does go to a gym a few times a week, BUTT she always takes me on great walks and hikes a few times a week also. She much perfers time with me than time in the gym.
    Blessings,
    Goose

  4. What a lovely walk you had with your mum.

    I love the Memory stones.

Yes, if you find a white feather outside someone in heaven is thinking of you. If you find a white feather in doors, they’ve visited you.

  5. Bunny,
We love walking near the water. It’s fun and sometimes Mom will let us walk in it. (Not when it’s cold, though.)
Our Mom said to tell you that she loved Dan Fogelberg and that she listened to his songs through her high school and college years. Now she’s sad because she did know he died of that awful disease at such a young age.
We wish we had a special doggie bakery around here but since we don’t, we’re going right now to ask Mom to make us some Puppy Cakes today. Good idea, Bunny!
    Love,
    Truly, Maggie and Walker

  6. Beautiful day for a little adventure. Especially if it ends at the doggie bakery.

  7. You are such a lucky Bunny. Your Momma is so good to you. Looks like a great adventure for sure and we think some of the pics should go in that book offer we sent your Momma. :) Sniffs, The HoundDogs

  12. Bunny, sounds like a wonderful “mommy & me” day. Even though my own pups love their canine “siblings”, they always like their own special time with all fun and the attention on just them for the day.

  13. What a beautiful place you have to walk, Bunny. So much to see. I was quite the Fogelberg fan in high school and college. So sad he died so young. :(

  19. Wow! That lake is a gorgeous blue. I had to click on the Dan F link because I am a total sap about one of his songs – Longer. I am not otherwise a fan but this song, I loved and sang a lot of when I was Much Younger and no doubt Sentimental LOL. Thanks for the memory X
