I think everyone has bedtime routines. They are a comfort and help us to settle in to end the day peacefully. At least, I think that’s usually the case. I know it’s funny how missing one little thing can throw you off, too.
Of course, we have a bedtime routine here. It starts with making sure Morgan and Küster are in their crates. Bunny and Blueberry get bundled up in their coats if need be and then they go out to the turn out pen together. A few minutes later, after business has been taken care of, they come in and get unbundled.
After that, it’s Küster’s turn to go out. My husband takes him out on a leash and lets him take care of his business and then he brings him back in. At this point, it’s bedtime for Küster. He goes into a crate in the bedroom and the rest of us relax for thirty or forty minutes while he gets settled.
However, every night, he has an escort as my husband leads him in to the crate on his leash. As soon as Mr. Taleteller and Küster head outside, Bunny assumes her stance near the doorway from the kitchen to the living room. This is the route my husband and the black tornado take to the bedroom crate. As they come back in, our tiny little hound is hot on their heels. When they enter the bedroom, she follows close behind and watches to be sure that Küster has not only been ensconced in his crate, but has also been double bolted in. As soon as the second bolt is slid home, she trots back out to the living room, satisfied that all is right in the world and that the world will sleep peacefully while the infidel is kept in his place.
I’m not sure why she thinks she has to personally supervise the whole thing, but it’s become a solid part of our bedtime routine. Apparently, she doesn’t trust Mr. Taleteller to take care of things properly. They both need careful supervision in her opinion. We laugh about it every night. I guess Bunny sleeps better knowing that the world is safe from Küster. The humans sleep better after a laugh from a certain regal little hound and her antics, too.

Whatever will she do come the day that Küster has free access to the house at night? Oh dear.
The last time I visited Kuster was still a rumbunctious teenager… I can’t believe it’s been so long…
Bunny, your sheep are leaving your dreams without your permission… put them back in your mind.
Huggies and Cheeese.

Can you imagine the look on Bunny’s face if Kuster ever got out of the crate and layed on your bed?
LOL
I love the routines we develop with our dogs. It would be interesting to know what she is thinking, wouldn’t it?
Mango Momma
I’m sure Bunny sleeps better knowing the routine has been followed properly. Our routine consists of opening the back door and yelling ‘Last Call’. It can sound like a stampede depending on how many dogs we have at the time.
Awwww, Bunny. You such a good babysitter. Someone surely needs to make sure Kuster is keep in line. You can come over anytime and help Oreo babysit Chewy.
I am under supervision too at bedtime. Casper and Nikki run ahead into the bedroom, but Freedom follows me in, right at my side. She has that serious supervisory look the entire time. I call her my wingman.
Right now I’m reading about all the conflicting views scientists have about dog intelligence and state of mind. I would love to know what they would make of Bunny’s supervisory role.
It sounds more like a Border Collie behavior than something I’d expect from a greyhound. But I guess it’s yet more proof that Bunny isn’t just any greyhound.
Does Bunny give a sigh of relief knowing that Kuster is put away for the night? LOL
Will there come a day tha the does not sleep in the crate?
Blessings,
Goose
That’s a cute bedtime story. I’m glad that Bunny feels that she must keep you all safe for the night! Maybe that’s why my dog chases my cats down the hall every night…maybe he feels a little exercise for those plump felines might help them sleep soundly! Happy Saturday.
It sure is funny how the pups will sometimes create their own routines. I guess Bunny doesn’t trust that Mr. TT won’t just leave Kuster loose one night.

LOLOLOL Sounds like Bunny is the bedtime moderator! We have a similar routine, last walk of the night then straight to crate and a tiny treat. It is so funny to watch them every night, and also how they know it’s the last walk!
That’s funny, and hubby and I had a good laugh over it. It is funny how sometimes they slip into supervisory roles… that’s usually our cats, for us.
But all of the animals really like a routine. So much so that the dogs will crate themselves at night if we don’t do it on time. (We call it auto-crating.)
Clearly, you have to keep an eye on those menfolk!
It’s like how if my fiance gives Elka a cue, but I’m there, she looks at me first like “Is this okay? Does he mean it?”
I think Morgan may be conducting seminars in home security and Bunny is an A+ student!
The Black Tornado … BOL!
Hope you’re all having a great weekend!

Bunny is the Queen and he has to be sure that her subjects are behaving properly!!
It’s good to know that you have Bunny to keep things in check! She’s a smart gal!
Bunny says those men bear considerable watching!
At our house, one hound thinks he’s completely in charge of the bedtime routine. At 1 second past 9:00 p.m., Walker start pestering us to go to bed. He’ll sometimes run up the stairs, stay for a while, then run back down the stairs and flounce into the living room with an exasperated look on his face. Of course, we just ignore him. When he’s finally tired of pestering and lays down – you guessed it. It really is time for bed.
Aw… that’s funny, because it reminds me of the way Jeffie was with Sid when Sid was hurt. He had to supervise his outings to the garden, and I’m not entirely sure he wasn’t supervising us, too!
Bunny is a real sweetheart. It’s hard to see how small she is in the photos. She seems like a large personality!
I loved reading about your end of the day routine and how Bunny takes hers very seriously! Of course we have ours too, and Charlie always runs to get his spot on our bed before Todd comes and claims the primo spot!
And some people say that dogs don’t think or reason……Bunny dear, keep up the good work.
Bert
Bunny, you are too funny. Put that kid to bed, so you can relax!
Do you run and bark in your sleep when you are counting sheep? We do!!
Wyatt and Stanzie
I have heard Greyhounds have quirks like this – very neat.
Love the first pic…just to die for!
Bunny is a sweetheart. I love that she cares so much about the goings on of your family and likes to make sure the house is running smoothly. I know I could use the help, sometimes. It would be nice to have a dog who helped decrease the chaos, as opposed to adding to it!
LOL, oh Bunny, you are a mystery. I love that you supervise Mr. Taleteller. Maybe he really needs it…
The real question is, how long has this routine gone on for? It seems like its always changing in our house.
