Working Out Differences With The AKC GoodDog! HelplineSM #AKCDogLovers #Sponsored

by Houndstooth on

The last time I talked about the AKC GoodDog! HelplineSM, I mentioned that there were several different issues that I would like to ask them about.  When I made my first phone call to the Helpline, I wanted to make sure that I could answer the question that is first and foremost in my mind.  That issue relates to Bunny and Morgan.

Let's Hike -- Tales and Tails

Let’s Hike!

I have mentioned that we have some problems with Morgan.  One that is really upsetting and concerning for me is that she fights with Bunny.  There is often a specific trigger for this.  When Bunny has been gone somewhere and comes home, Morgan rushes her, trying to sniff her and put her paw on Bunny’s back.  Bunny has zero tolerance for this, and in spite of the fact that Morgan is a lot more powerful than she is, she will snark at Morgan for coming up to her after we’ve been away.  Things devolve from there.  Actually, they devolved to the point where Bunny and I ended up with scratches and bruises the last time it happened about a month ago.  What I really want is to find peace in our house again.

Enter the AKC GoodDog! HelplineSM.  I called and explained the issue and triggers as clearly as I could.  I also explained that Morgan is on fluoxetine to help mellow out her behavior.  I spoke with a lovely lady named Elizabeth who suggested breaking their old habit and starting a new routine.  So, when Bunny and I come home from somewhere, they will meet outside on leashes and maybe take a short walk around the block together before coming back inside.  It gives them a chance to reconnect and settle down before coming in the house to relax.  I can also put Bunny in the turn out pen and bring Morgan outside if I’m coming home with Bunny by myself.

AKC SpanielI have to say, I’m excited about trying this because I was out of ideas about how to find peace here in the house.  Bunny and Morgan have such an odd dynamic between them that I’m flummoxed by it at times.  If we go out away from the house, Morgan is extremely protective of Bunny and me.  Bunny will also choose to stay pretty close to Morgan.  Their interactions in the house are what’s different, but hopefully we’re on the track to find a way to change that.  Making that phone call made me feel like a burden has been lifted off my shoulders, and that is worth it’s weight in gold.  I also like that I can call back at any time if I have other issues in the future.  The service is good for the life of your dog and you can use it whether you’re enrolled in some kind of class or just trying to work out an issue.  I’m sure that we’ll have more issues to address in the future, but for now, tackling this one is enough for us, but I definitely plan to use the helpline to work out a few other things that have been issues in our house, too.
