With Gratitude In Our Hearts

by Houndstooth on

I suspect that whether you live in the United States or not, you have some idea that we’re celebrating Thanksgiving today.  I admit, it’s a holiday that I enjoy.  It doesn’t have the commercial bent to it that other holidays do.  It’s a day focused on reflecting on what you have and being thankful for it.  Sure, it can be a stressful time, too, with a little too much togetherness with certain people that maybe rub you the wrong way, but hopefully there’s just enough of that for you to appreciate going home to some peace and quiet later, if you’re able to.

Recent events in our lives have given me a different perspective on the holiday and what it means.  Traditionally, it’s been a time for us to enjoy time with family and friends.  Last week, I found myself really sick and on top of that, my dad was admitted to the hospital for a problem that’s been recurring and he ended up having surgery.  This has changed our plans for Thanksgiving, but I can’t say that I mind.  For the first time, we’ll get to spend some relaxing time at home with the dogs, see the dog show on television and get to spend time with family, too.  It won’t be traditional, but I do expect it to be pleasant.  We will be celebrating Thanksgiving with gratitude in our hearts for all that we have.

As a matter of fact, it’s reminded me of why I really enjoy the holiday.  It’s not about eating too much turkey and mashed potatoes for me.  Even the pumpkin pie isn’t what I think of first when it comes to the holiday.  The important part of the holiday to me is spending time with loved ones, whether they’re human or furry and forgetting the rest of the world for awhile.  I hope that whether you celebrate Thanksgiving today or not that you can find something to be grateful for in your life.  The truth is, if we spent more time focused on what we have as opposed to what we don’t, we’d probably all be a lot happier.  Even if you’re just thankful that you don’t have to go to work today or that you have a canine companion by your side, be good to yourself and enjoy it for all that its worth.  And please know that if you are reading this, no matter where you are or what you’re doing, we are thankful for you, not just because you read what we write and share the journey with us, but also because you bring yourself to the world and make it a little brighter by being who you are.
