The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same

by Houndstooth on

This week, the blog had a birthday.  The very first post I wrote was just an introduction.  The second one is the first one I consider to be a real post.  It was written on March 6, 2009.  It’s hard to believe I’ve been writing our tales of canine mischief and adventure for that long.

Lilac Enjoys the Fan -- Tales and TailsWhen I first started the blog, I really only thought a few of my close friends and Mr. Taleteller would ever read it.  To my surprise, we’re now read by people all over the world and our dogs have been recognized in some unusual places.  In the beginning, Bunny was the puppy of our group, and now she’s the matriarch.  Lilac was the old lady in our early days and she entertained a lot of people with her crotchety ways.  The truth is, those posts about Lilac helped me to cope with something that was actually very trying, as she went through stages of Canine Cognitive Disorder.  We said good bye to Hawk after a mystery illness suddenly left him really feeling his old age.  Blueberry was still a younger dog when the blog started, too, and she grew old rather gracefully as the blog progressed.

We’ve seen the addition of Morgan.  Everyone’s hearts broke when Lilac passed away.  Then we learned about how Küster fell in love with me because I taste like chicken.  We had a lot of fun watching him grow up from being a young puppy to a grown up working dog.  We began struggling to find answers for Morgan, and we’re still looking for some of those for her.  Blueberry left us suddenly in our first encounter with the deadly thief known as osteosarcoma.  Following that devastating loss, Flattery joined our family and has become the resident court jester and princess in training.

Smile at the SunsetLife has been a wild ride these past five years.  My voice has grown and matured as time has passed.  This blog has taken me to places I never dreamed possible in the past five years.  I never imagined people would recognize my dogs on the street, especially when we were half the country away from home.  It never occurred to me that I’d win sponsored trips to conferences or awards for photography from the blog.  I certainly never thought I’d start meeting people in real life who tell me that they read the blog and enjoy it.  Ironically, my family doesn’t read it, so it’s not my mom who says that, but I think Mr. Taleteller’s sisters look forward to stories I tell about him from time to time.

The truth is, though, that this is a chronicle of our lives.  There are other things thrown in, too, but our day to day life still remains a big focus of the blog.  We’ve also thrown in some reviews and information we thought was worth sharing from time to time, but I still feel that most people come here to read about our humorous stories and hopefully those are still things that a lot of our readers out there can relate to.  Five years ago, I would never have dreamed that we’d be at this point today and I can’t even begin to fathom where we’ll be five years from now, but I hope that I’m writing another post to celebrate the milestone.  It sure would have been a dull five years without dogs in our lives, and the truth is that it feels like it’s flown by.  I started out writing about our dogs and all the fun they bring into our lives, and I feel like we still do that, in spite of all the changes that we’ve been through.  Thank you to everybody who reads the blog, shares our stories and pictures and enjoys the ride along with us!

    Happy birthday to your blog.

I had to go back and look to see when I started mine, it was just a few months earlier and for exactly the same the reasons, I wanted to keep track of the stories that made our life so wonderful.

I’m ever so glad we were able to connect.

I started reading your blog when we got our first greyhound Molly. It’s been so fun reading antics and attitudes in your dogs that are so similar to hers and our borzoi. Thank you!

Don’t teach Flattery any troublemaking tricks…unless you’re sure that you won’t get caught! Morgan and Kuster, so glad that you’re in the family to keep the working dog side of things known!

I think I remember all your dogs except Hawk. I will have to go back and look now as the name really escapes me. Love reading all about your tribes adventures when I am able to stop by.

  24. Wow, happy blogiversary.

I’m celebrating my 4th soon and Tales and Tails has been an inspiration to me since I first started. And continues to be today.

You have such a gentle humor and folksy way to sharing your stories. You’re like the Prairie Home Companion of dog blogs. And your photos… Oh. My. Dog.

It’s good thing I’m happy being a terrible photographer. Because otherwise I’d just have to smack you for being so good.

Thank you (and to the entire Taleteller clan) for giving us so many hours of entertainment.

Congratulations on five years of blogging! It was very interesting for me to go back and read your first post, since I’ve only been reading your blog for about a year, I’ve only read about some of your past dogs a little bit and it is hard to believe how much your group has changed over 5 years. Keep up the great work….you are truly a success at this!

  27. Dory and the Mama says:

Time flies by so quickly, I have been following your journey since almost the very beginning and am enjoying every second of the ride. Thanks for sharing and keep up the wonderful work!!

Wow….5 years? Congrats. I didn’t realize you had been writing that much longer than me. Your’s has always been one of our favorite blogs. I feel like we have a lot on common with “the chronically of your life” or can at least relate. Of course, all your beautiful doggie pictures is a big draw too 🙂

  29. Michelle Ridlon says:
