The Job I Was Made For

by Houndstooth on

This week while I’ve been on break, I’ve enjoyed being able to sit down in the mornings with the girls and take my time starting the day.  As I was relaxing the other morning, I saw a segment on the Today Show that made me sit up and take notice.  I’d heard the promotion clip for it the day before, so I was waiting for it to come on.  When it did come on, though, I was captivated.  I sat watching it and thought to myself “this is the job I was made for.”  That might be a little too simplistic, but I do think that it would be a really interesting job to have.

There were two State Troopers there with Selma, a Black Labrador who is trained to sniff out electronics.  You might think that’s an odd thing to train a dog to search for, so I’ll elaborate a little on what her job is.  If you live in the US, you might remember a guy named Jared who used to tell everyone to eat at Subway.  He lost a lot of weight eating Subway sandwiches and they hired him to star in their commercials.

For years he made a decent living as the face of weight loss while eating Subway sandwiches, but then his dark secret came to light.  Jared was into child pornography, and not just one or two suggestive pictures.  When the police searched his house, a Black Labrador named Bear was brought in and he found all of Jared’s hidden stashes of porn.  What a lot of people don’t realize is that people into child porn find very clever ways to hide it.  They don’t store it on their phones or regular laptops.  They have hidden laptops, tablets, flash drives or SD cards.  The risk of family members or other people finding it is too great.

What I know from Mr. Taleteller in his job is that it can take days or weeks to go through the house of a pedophile to find all of their hidden stashes.  Sometimes it takes three or four people going through a room before they find something hidden.  A dog can go through a house and reduce the time of that job to hours.  It saves manpower and makes it a lot more likely that the police will find the incriminating evidence they need to put these people behind bars.  They also find those little cameras that people hide in bathrooms to spy on people and a host of other electronics that people don’t want found.

I’ll be honest, I’m not sure if I could deal with the difficulties involved in finding child porn on a regular basis.  It has to be a job that weighs on your heart.  But how cool that we are finding more and more ways for dogs to help us get around things like this and make our world a better place.  I can’t wait to see what kind of jobs we have for dogs in the future, as well as what kind of jobs their people will have.  If you would like to see Selma at work, click here.
