So You Want To Be A Search Dog

by Houndstooth on

Saturday morning, Kuster went off with Mr. Taleteller for his first Search and Rescue training.  There is another puppy who also just joined the group and was born just three days before Kuster was.  So, he’ll grow up training with a Golden Retriever named Buzz.  I know my husband was very excited to go to training with a dog at his side, or well, under his arm, at least.  This is something he has wanted to do for a very long time, and going for the last year or so without a dog of his own has been fun, but not the same as having his own working dog.  I admit, I was happy for him as he left for the training with a beaming smile on his face.  I’m sure it makes the new nipple piercing completely worth it!

So You Want to Be a SAR DogKuster and Buzz spent some time waiting in their crates, some time playing with new people and kids, and some time playing with each other.  From what I’ve heard, Buzz is quite a problem-solver and climber like Kuster.  Hopefully they’ll both be full-fledged SAR dogs in two years.

Oh, That Feels Good!Yes, Kuster really did start training on Saturday.  Right now, training involves playing games.  He has to be more interested in playing with his people than anything else.  So, he’d play for a while with Buzz and then he was expected to come back to Mr. Taleteller when he was called.  He needs to learn that the best thing in the world is coming to his person.  Mr. Taleteller hopes to do what’s called “area search” with Kuster because right now there’s only one area search dog in the group.  To do area search, Kuster has to really like people and develop an urge to find him.  For those who are wondering, area search dogs are the ones who look for lost or missing people in large, wooded areas, without a last known place where the person was seen, and without an article of scent.

CirclingBunny and Blueberry were happy to learn that he has to be a little less interested in playing with other dogs.  Morgan, not so much.  He’ll still get to play with them, we just need to foster the idea in him that playing with people is more fun.  Since he tends to be very people-oriented, I don’t think that will be a problem.  Kuster was thrilled that Mr. Taleteller stopped and bought a horsewhip for him to play chase games with, too.

Getting to Know YouOne thing I do know is that SAR training must have been exhausting.  He came home one very tired puppy.  As a matter of fact, Mr. Taleteller came home very tired, too.  We were happy to have a few hours of peace.  It was the first time in a week that it got quiet around here and it didn’t turn out to be a bad thing.  Kuster had a great first experience there and I have a feeling he’ll be excited to go back.

A small end note — a Greyhound that we know, Luna, of Luna’s Life in the Garden State, had a terrible accident this weekend.  I think it would mean a great deal to her family if some people dropped in and offered words of support.  Luna hasn’t been retired and living with her new family for too long, and we’re hoping that she’ll make a full recovery and be back at home soon!

  • It’s amazing how similar Kuster and Buzz look in that last picture, given how different they are going to appear once full grown! What cuties!

  • Sue

    Double cuteness:)

Glad Kuster enjoyed his first training session. Sounds like you are all going to busy with the little guy.

  • I reckon Kuster will grow up to be a dog that you’re really proud of. It’s a great thing to do. Will pop by and see Luna. Deccy x

  • Oh no … how I hate to hear that a greyhound has had a ‘terrible accident’… I’ll pop over there in a minute. I hope she’s be OK!

Kuster looks like a great dog. You have actually managed to instil in me (for the first time!) a faint desire to have a puppy. What a wonderful thing to do! S & R is such a worthwhile thing – and presumably very rewarding. Good for Mr T and little K!! Many congratulations and good wishes for a smooth and successful training. I’m really interested to hear how he does over the next two years!

PS – I hope the nipple is healing. *Snigger*

  • Why do I have the feeling that Kuster and Buzz together may cause some mischief in class? 🙂 I will really look forward to reading all about how your little boy does in his training!

good for Kuster and Mr Taleteller! Area S&R sounds like fun 🙂 kind of like Bender’s tracking classes. I am sure Kuster will want to find people, just like Bender does.

  • Looks like so much fun and that picture of Kuster is great. I am so excited to be following Kuster’s journey into becoming a search and rescue dog. I plan on learning so much from your experience. Sniffs, The HoundDogs

  • Kuster and Buzz are, of course, adorable! I’m so happy for Mr. Taleteller and proud of Kuster to begin his training. Sending best wishes for the launch of an important career.

Kuster and Buzz, I am confident you will both find a very rewarding career in SAR. You will work hard but also play hard. You will travel widely and meet many other SAR dogs and lots of great people who want to help you succeed. You will have experiences that other dogs cannot even imagine. After many months of hard of training you will be challenged with a test which proves you are ready to be a hero dog. I am confident you will both pass that test with flying colors. And then the big day comes, the day that you get to help make a difference is someone’s life. When that day arrives and you help to return a human to it’s family, well, you will just have experience that yourself but I promise you will love it! I look forward to being part of it!!

  • Wow, already in SAR training. They grow up so fast 🙂

Woo hoo! I’m happy for Mr. Taleteller. My dog, Acadia, was an area search dog, and the training was very fun! She started as a small puppy, like Kuster, and it was all fun and games.

This will be a great way to keep a high-energy dog like Kuster stimulated and happy!!!!

    Love the kute Kuster photos!

  • Awwww….they are adorable!

We are sending Luna and her parents lots of good thoughts.

  • OMG!!!!! How ADORABLE is Kuster!!

Bad news. Calhoun and McIver got in a massive fight last week. I got bit 3 times trying to break it up. I thought my forearm was actually broken. It all started because I was trimming Cal’s nails, he got grumpy about it and McIver wasn’t going to allow him to treat his Mamma like that. So… McIver is back with my friend, the breeder. He will serve as her “guard dog” for her 10 acre farm. I miss him terribly but I cannot continue to worry about breaking up fights between a 95lbs dog and an 85 lbs dog by myself. I am mending slowly but WOW- they both have powerful bites!

How wonderful that the training has already begun. Puppies soak up new things like sponges. They learn so fast!

Ever since I read Susannah Charleson’s book, Scent of the Missing, I’ve had the utmost interest and respect in SAR dogs. I’m really glad that I’m able to see the progression here!

  • Kuster and Buzz are so cute together! Area search sounds like it’s really hard. What an important job that will be.

  • I’d love to be a search dog –

  • I just know I’m going to love hearing about all Kuster’s fun training adventures!

  • Wow!!! Kuster’s gone to school already. I bet he loves it and I bet he’ll be an amazing SAR dog. What a really important job to do.

I bet Bunny and Blueberry will enjoy the peace if he keeps being tired about by his fun training.

    Love and licks, Winnie

  • The puppies are so adorable!

And the training sounds like it would be tons of fun for both of them. I wish human jobs were that entertaining XD

  • Well I think Kuster sure did find a new furend!!! What a sweetheart!! Such a cutie!!

  • Ooooh, fun! Kind of reminds me of all of the time we spent at therapy dog training–but obviously different as well. Glad it slowed him down for a while after he got home! Peace and quiet is a wonderful thing, isn’t it? You probably won’t have that until puppyhood is over! :)))) Enjoy every minute of the puppy stages though–it goes by so quickly!

  • I had no idea you had SAR plans for Kuster! How cool is that? And even cooler that you’re such an awesome person and will share it all here. I can’t wait to read more!

  • Wow, they start young, don’t they? We are excited to learn more about SAR, it will be fun to learn and watch Kuster grow.

We will go visit Luna, thanks for telling us.

  • That is so exciting! You and Mr. Taleteller are so dedicated and organized to work towards such high levels of training, and I have no doubt that Kuster will attain high levels and make you very proud. Off to visit Luna now.

  • They are so darn cute together. Wow, Kuster seems so long to start training, I had no idea.

How does Morgan do being left at home? Sometimes I feel really guilty because the red head is getting a lot of attention.

Just been catching up on the Kuster posts. He sure is a cutie. Yep, those puppies will try to nurse from the most improbable sources. We had a Dane puppy once that tried to nurse on one of our male Danes, who had about the same reaction as Mr. TT. Sort of adding insult to injury, from the male point of view.

Bet the greyhounds will get in a LOT of couch occupying while Kuster grows up.

  • It’s going to be very interesting reading about Kuster’s (and Buzz’s). I didn’t think it would be started so soon. He is looking more handsome every post. I’m sure he’s got more than his fair share of brain cells too and won’t have any trouble learning the ropes.

I am way behind with blogs again and hadn’t read about Luna. What a scary accident.

  • They are so adorable!!! Puppy, puppy, puppy…PUPPY!!!

  • Can’t get enough puppy goodness!

I’ve been wondering for a little while how one gets involved with SAR training. Not that I really need to join another dog training class! 😛 But I’d like to see if my dog would be good at it. The dogs always look so thrilled to be working. I don’t think there is anything like this in my area, unfortunately. So I’ll have to live vicariously through your blog!

  • Those two are so cute!! I am sure they will stir up lots of trouble while they train!
