Search And Rescue Saturday — An Observation

by Mr. Taleteller on

This weeks Search and Rescue Saturday is a little less K-9 SAR related and more of just an observation.

Lately Küster has been learning something new to add to his “skill set”.  Okay, it’s more that we are being exposed to something new.  What are we learning? We will cover that on a different weekend.  Right now, I am just seeing how my partner takes to this new skill set.

Always Prepared

How long have we been trying this new skill?  Well, last night was our second session.  As in most things we always try to do three training runs.  Sometimes more, sometimes less.  Küster has tried the new skill six times.  So far, he seems to enjoy the new skill. He also seems to be catching on.  Only time will tell.  This all brings me to my observation.

These dogs are smart.  Fine readers I totally understand you are now thinking “Really? No crap.  Okay Mr. Obvious, this is a dog blog and we are all dog lovers of course we all think dogs are smart.’

Sometimes we get used to how things work and somewhat unappreciative of them because of the day to day routines.  In our case it could be training.  Küster and I have been training together for four years now.  I am used to how he works.  We continue to train and try to come up with new scenarios and different places to train.  But to sit down after many discussions with other K-9 handlers and say, “Hey Küster let’s learn something new”, brings out just how adaptive and smart our K-9’s are.  As I watch another dog team, help train another dog by hiding for them, or just watch a dog and their person playing in a park.  I am always am impressed by the brain power of our four legged friends.

It is interesting how different breeds and different dogs have different skills. What Polly has learnt is totally different to what Honey has learnt, despite me trying to teach her what Polly does.

Looking forward to reading about Kusters new skill.

Hope you are having a nice weekend. Sue, Polly & Honey

I agree! We don’t do nearly what you do, but since I’ve been trick training with our Lab mix Luke, I am constantly amazed and thrilled when he shows me just how smart he is!
