Every day, our dogs give us the gift of their presence with wagging tails, walks together and quiet time together. As the holidays approach, they don’t give two figs about presents and gift giving, but we humans like to give gifts this time of year. Since dogs enrich our lives so much, it’s natural that we want to give them something. Let’s face it, gifts for dogs make us happy as the givers, regardless of how much or little we spend. I thought it would be fun to share some of the things our dogs are getting this year in case you’re looking for ideas. We weren’t paid for any of these recommendations, but sometimes we all need a little inspiration.
If you need a stocking for your dog, we found some Dog Bone Shaped Stockings that you can get embroidered with your dog’s name. They’re cute, won’t break the bank and will hold some nice goodies for your dog from the jolly old elf. You can’t ask for more than that. She also makes some cute stuffed bones and some bandannas that slide over your dog’s collar. Bunny and Flattery can’t wear bandanna slides, but if Küster makes any December public appearances, he’s going to look very dapper.
Inside the stockings, there will be some toys from Planet Dog and you can find something appropriate whether your dog has been naughty or nice, or even if he lights the Menorah. We have a few Planet Dog toys that are still here from our first two Greyhounds over eleven years ago. Our dogs love them and I am oddly fascinated by the faint minty smell they have. One of the things I like about buying from Planet Dog is that they are a company with a heart, not just for our planet as they use recycled materials but they also give back with a lot of philanthropy through their Planet Dog Foundation. I prefer shopping at a place that is trying to make the world a better place.
We like to spoil our dogs with a little special food on the holidays, and this year our dogs will be enjoying Merrick’s Forever Home Holiday Recipe again. Our dogs like every flavor Merrick ever made, but Forever Home gives a meal to a dog in a local shelter for every can purchased. So, you can spoil your dog and a dog waiting for a home at the same time. It certainly suits the spirit of giving in our eyes. Our dogs are hoping for some of their Fresh Kisses in their stockings as well, and just between you and me, I don’t think they’ll be disappointed.
In case your dog needs a nice place for visions of sugarplums, invest in a duvet dog bed from Molly Mutt. Our dogs are still in love with these dog beds and I love the ease and convenience they add to our lives. On top of that, they are pretty and stylish with great patterns for male and female dogs. If one of our dogs has an accident on one or eats a messy treat, we unzip it, toss it in the wash and then pop the inside back in. They also make lovely crate covers and car seat covers, and we have yet to encounter one of their products that we didn’t love. Our dogs agree.
Finally, the Greyhounds in our house love Voyagers K9 Apparel. We get asked all the time where Bunny and Flattery’s coats, raincoats, tummy warmers and boots come from and this is what’s in our closet. I bought Bunny’s first coat and tummy warmer eight years ago and she’s still wearing both of them. We’ve added new tummy warmers through the years to have fun colors for different holidays and occasions, but we haven’t had to part with any of them. They’re perfect for everything from serious hiking and outdoor play in really cold weather to a little extra comfort inside or on a quick potty break outside. With a senior dog, I appreciate that we don’t have to lift legs to get them into the coats, and that once you get it on, you just Velcro it closed to keep it in place. I also like that you can use their products together to combat different weather problems. Their products get us through rain, snow, sleet and a few other inclement weather conditions.
So, that’s what’s on our list of things for the dogs this year. They bring us joy throughout the year and we enjoy spoiling them and making them happy and safe, too. I’d love to hear about things that you’re getting for your dogs this year because we’re always on the lookout for something new that we haven’t tried.
