This weekend, we had a celebration at our house. A certain little black dog turned six years old on Saturday and we celebrated in a quiet family fashion with a few toys and treats. Maybe Flattery is our resident love bug because she’s born so close to Valentine’s Day, but whatever the reason, there’s no denying that she’s a sweetheart.
I look back on our time with her and I realize that while it’s true that we gave Flattery a home, she’s been a present that we gave to ourselves. Flattery is a gift that keeps on giving and I am eternally grateful that we took a chance on her even though we weren’t sure that we were ready to let another dog into our hearts. We’d recently lost Blueberry and I didn’t think we’d find another dog as funny and quirky as she was.
Flattery defied the odds, though, right from the beginning. She’d already come back from being extremely sick when she came to the adoption kennel, and she is determined to grab life by the tail. Flattery lives every minute to the fullest, regardless of what she’s doing. If she’s going for a ride in the car, it’s the best adventure so far. Taking a walk is always a chance to experience the bliss of the outdoors. Even when she sleeps, there’s always a huge grin on her face. To put it simply, Flattery chooses to make the best of every situation and get as much from it as she can.
That reminder is just one of the reasons that she’s a blessing in our lives. There is also the fact that she makes us laugh every day. Often, she doesn’t even have to try. She doesn’t try in the slightest to hide the joy she gets from our company or how much she enjoys every life experience.
Its true that her mischief keeps us on our toes, but I confess that I enjoy that side of her. I know that some people would be exasperated by her antics, and sometimes we are, too, but most of the time, I can’t help but laugh and wonder about her motivations. We have gotten so much back from her that the mischief is just a lovable quirk.
I can only say that I hope she’s keeping us on our toes and helping us to see the wonder in the world for many years to come. We are the lucky ones who got the best gift of all. I love that we are able to share her with all of you, too.
