A Chill In The Air

by Houndstooth on

After a July that was one of the hottest in history, it feels a little crazy that we are at the beginning of September now with temperatures that we usually see at the end of the month.  It’s a bit brisk in the early mornings and in the evenings, it’s getting dark and there’s a chill in the air.  I’ve been dreading the end of Summer with its long, lazy days, but my dogs have other ideas.

Bunny is a my cold weather girl.  Anything over 70 degrees (or 21.1 for you on the Celsius scale) and Bunny is ready to stay inside in the air conditioning.  To tell the truth, I was a little worried that she was turning into a very senior hound.  The change in the weather last weekend, however, put a spring in her step that I haven’t seen in months.

We stopped to investigate a trail I’d recently found.  There wasn’t a lot of time, so my plan was just to see the beginning of the trail and take a few pictures by the bridge I’d seen there.  The next thing I knew, we were heading down the trail and Bunny was jockeying to be sure she was the lead dog.  It was like she’d gone back in time several years.  The adventurous little trailblazer I’ve always known and loved was right there.

Welcome, Autumn! -- Tales and Tails

Welcome Autumn!

It seems she’s been there all summer, just waiting for the cool weather to come back.  I’m sure it’s not a surprise to read that I’m relieved to have her back.  I shouldn’t be surprised.  I know how much she likes the cool, crisp air of Autumn and every year, she likes the heat of Summer even less.

Flattery, on the other hand, has been happy as a clam in the summer heat.  She’s been enjoying the weather so far, but I know that soon, she’s not going to like the cold air.  That means that we have to make the most of the transitional weather while we can.  Right now, we’re in the glorious not-too-hot, not-too-cold in between season that everybody enjoys.

I’m glad Bunny feels differently about the changing weather than I do because it gives me a different perspective.  The cooler weather means longer walks, more time to snuggle, pumpkin spice everything and more time to enjoy outdoor adventures.  If the girls want to go with me on errands, it’s perfectly fine.  Hikes are about to be back in season.  Mother Nature is putting on her finest colors for us to admire.   I feel like I’m in better health to enjoy being out and about more this year, too.  There are a lot of things to look forward to as the seasons change and I prefer to look at the positive beautiful things than dwell on the parts that I don’t like.

By far, though, my favorite part is having Bunny try to lead me down the driveway or off the beaten path for an extra walk or adventure, though.

Both my girls, but particularly Polly is happier now the temps are lower if we are out and about. She does however love to find a sunspot and lay it when indoors.

    Lovely photos of beautiful Bunny.

Enjoy your hikes. Sue, Polly & Honey

Bunny is just like my 9 year old borzoi Gus — he dozed through summer, then suddenly got his mojo back when it got cooler — tell Bunny she looks lovely in that leaf fascinator!
