I mentioned last week that Morgan has developed a fascination with my pistachios. This weekend, I discovered another fantastic use for pistachios. They serve as the ultimate wild puppy soother.
Usually, when we first let Küster out of his crate, he lives up to his nickname of The Black Tornado. He’s a whirling dervish of activity that is almost too fast for the human eye to see. He also tends to aggravate Morgan while she’s in her crate and annoy Bunny and Blueberry who continue to ask why we haven’t sold him to the gypsies yet.
Saturday morning, while Küs was playing, Morgan was being a very good girl in her crate, so I went in and got a few pistachios for her and dropped them into her crate. As luck would have it, one bounced out. Before I could retrieve it, Küster had it in his maw and was off with it.
He ran off, then laid down with it. He seemed perplexed about what to do with it. He noticed that Morgan was ever so carefully extracting her nut from the shell. The puppy wonder began to lick the shell and laid down in a state of contented bliss as he licked the shell and worked on extracting his own pistachio. He rolled around on the floor gazing at it in adoration. He carried it around the room in his mouth very carefully from place to place. For twenty minutes, there was blissful silence broken only by the sounds of cracking nutshells and the television.
Apparently, all you need to have a good puppy is a pistachio still in the shell. I didn’t think I could love pistachios any more, but I find that I do! Now I’m off to buy stock in pistachios, since I plan to keep well stocked in them at our house.
We’re participating in this Saturday’s Pet Blog Hop, hosting by Life With Dogs, Two Little Cavaliers and Confessions of the Plume. If you’d like to participate, please follow the rules and follow your three hosts, add your blog to the Linky and copy and paste the html code into your html editor. Thanks again to our hosts for putting on the hop!

How do they manage to get the pistachio nut away from the shell? It’s so tiny! I think Georgia would swallow the whole thing if I ever gave her one.
I love nuts too. It is amazing what will grab out attention.
Blessings,
Goose
This is brilliant! I live in Alaska and have a very bored houndie on my hands right now because of the cold. Also, I adore your blog <3
Stella would love that. I should buy her a bag. She is getting very bored with this 20 below zero stuff.
Cheers and hugs,
Jo, Stella and Zkhat
Wild bliss?? That’s just crazy!! lol But I love how it worked. He found his own little treasure! No doubt stay stock up on that!!
I’m amazed they don’t just give them one big chomp and be done with it! Lovely shots of Kuster BTW. You’re getting quite good at taking Black Dog Pictures, and he goes very well with that backdrop.
Glad you have found the magic Pistachios:) Now what about a hard nut like a Brazil or Walnut, that should keep him happy for hours:)
Hee, hee. WHo needs fancy, expensive dog puzzles, when you can just buy pistachios?
I can’t imagine mine would be so careful with them. Sounds likes a great item for the German Shepherds though. Who knew? LOL
How fascinating. I never thought of a pistachio in its shell as the ultimate food toy.
Hi Y’all!
I’ve got to get ahold of some of my Human’s pistachios! Only I think I’ll eat the shell too…I eat everthing if I can get ahold of it…paper…
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
What lovely pictures of Kuster! Keep plying him with more pistachios so we can see more glamour shots of him.
Millie
I think our boys would eat the whole thing without even thinking of it.
Sam
Kuster needs to do one of that pistachio cracking commercials. He could replace the honey badger
Sorry, I can’t leave a comment today…I’m off to get my pup some pistachios, too! LOL Happy Saturday!
I also wonder if my dogs would just eat them whole, or would also have the patience to crack them open. Kuster really is a beautiful dog!
Kuster & Morgan do it doggie style?
I think that if Dexter got a pistachio he would just swallow it whole.
I worry that Dakota would eat the entire nut AND shell! Are the nuts ok for them?
Who knew dogs would love pistachios so much! You should send your pistachio nut posts to the get crackin people! They probably have no idea that they are missing the dog market with their advertising!
lol
Hilarious! Who would have ever guessed? I love that he carried it around with him.
There’s just something about discovering something so simple like a pistachio that our pups like that warms your heart, doesn’t it?
These are so nice! Your studio photos are so very good. I know just how hard that dark fur can be under lights. Pft! He looks very well behaved from our side of the lens. I say more cookies for him or is that pistachio nuts!
I love it! I can’t imagine Cali being able to figure out what to do with a pistachio . .she is more of a peanut girl
Pistachios are my all time favorite snack. The ones from Turkey are the best in the whole, wide world. Kuster and Morgan have very good taste in snacks!
Are you worried that they will eat the shells?
I think it is so cute, how happy Kuster was to have a pistachio!
How interesting! Figures they like one of the expensive nuts, but considering the price of so many pup things…they may actually be cheap.
Wow, that’s a grreat discovery!
I love the photos, and I love your nut case! This story is too funny!
who can blame them! I love those nuts too
Oh, how funny! I’ve never given Elka an in-shell pistachio (I hog them for myself!); I wonder how long it would take her to figure it out.
Wait, what? Bella is always very interested in my pistachios but I never thought to give her one afraid the shells could hurt her. But now I’m wondering if you just gave us another option for entertaining our endlessly energetic pup.
Love the pictures, too. He’s a cutie.
Wait a minute … Bunny let Kuster up into the photo studio!?! How did that happen? =)
