We were contacted recently by Taste of the Wild and asked if the dogs would like to review their new flavor, Southwest Canyon, and share our thoughts. Since our dogs already eat Taste of the Wild, we were happy to give it a shot. I’m glad that we did.
Southwest Canyon is a new flavor that we weren’t aware of yet. It’s made with wild boar, a red meat alternative to satisfy a dog’s instinctual cravings. It also has chickpeas and peas instead of potatoes which gives this formula a lower glycemic index. This means more stable blood glucose levels for your dog.
The girls were very interested as soon as the box arrived. Their noses went into overdrive. Tails began to wag. I was pretty sure they would like it based on the initial reaction, and I was right. They attacked it with gusto as soon as their bowls went out.
We already feed our dogs Taste of the Wild because we researched it a while ago after the girls went on revolt after another food review. The problem was that we couldn’t find it anywhere locally. It wasn’t something we could find online, either. The girls absolutely refused to go back to what they were eating before, and we still had Lilac with us at the time. I had to find something that they would eat quickly. We went to our local dog bakery that carried several better brands of food in hopes of convincing them to order it for us. The owner told me she would order the food we’d tried, but she asked us to try Taste of the Wild first, and she gave us some some samples to try. The girls loved it and we’ve feeding it to them ever since. It was explained to us that after the dogs had food that was mainly protein based instead of grain based that they would really prefer the food with the protein in it. We have been very satisfied that we’re feeding them something that is nutritional and good for them.
We definitely recommend trying Taste of the Wild if you’re looking for something good to feed your dog. We were given samples of the food for the dogs to try. They’ve also offered to let one of our readers try it, as well. On top of getting samples of Taste of the Wild Southwest Canyon, they are giving away a $25 gift card for Petflow.com and a $25 gift card to Omaha Steaks. There will be red meat for everyone. If you’d like to enter, follow the Rafflecopter below. The contest is open until Saturday at midnight. The winner will be contacted by e-mail.

Wild Boar, blimey you sure do have some wonderful dog food over there. The most daring over here is Tuna.
Back when we were kibble eaters, we lived TOtW and Mama used to get it for us every few rotations. I bet the boar is awfully tasty, eh?
I know this would be popular with Freedom, Casper & Nikki.
Oh, those are yummy!
~Eva
Oooo wild boar sound very yummy indeed.
Blessings,
Goose
Red meat for everyone!
I’m glad the hounds like it.
Red meat for everyone! That sounds fantastic since mom and dad usually give me a little taste of theirs too.
Yum. Blue and Bettina eat Taste of the Wild. And we’ve tried the new flavor as well. No one is missing meal time at this house!
I’ve heard good things about TOTW dog food, but needless to say, it’s not available over here in England! However, we do have access to some interesting foods from Europe, among which is canned reindeer. Our dogs go NUTS over this stuff, which we use as an add-in to their usual kibble – a higher protein kibble they were both used to at the racing kennel. We still buy it from there and it’s dead cheap, but good quality. The reason it’s cheap is that here, food for working dogs like greyhounds is tax-free.
I should add that we only use reindeer occasionally as an add-in. It’s more expensive than local dog food, but more to the point, the only company I can find selling it often don’t pack it well and the tins arrive battered and dented.
Since Shiva does not tolerate red meat very well in quantities larger than a handful, I won’t enter the contest. But I do really like Taste of the Wild as a brand and have tried many of their white meat and fish flavours all to great success!
We use TOTW for training treats for the boys – they love it! I hadn’t heard of this new formula, and it would be interesting to know where the boar is being sourced. Thanks for letting us know about it!
Oooh, what a grreat idea! Sounds yummy.
I have heard of this food, and would like to give it a try!
Our dog food provider offered us samples of Taste of the Wild and my girl Stella is not even interested in trying it. She eats, and likes, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover Kibble, which despite its dorky name, lists out as a quality food. But here is where old cynical me comes in to say, where are they getting all these Wild Boars? USA? Europe? Who prepares them? Are we fishing the oceans dry to get f ish oil for bazillions of people who are convinced of its value? Where does all the Gingko come from that people are taking? There has to be an end to some of this stuff, doesn’t there?
If I am talking crazy, I’ll apologize here, but I would love to see some numbers sometime!
Cheers and hugs,
Jo, Mom to Stella and Zkhat
I used to feed taste of the Wild kibble before switching to raw. I still use their canned food sometimes if I need something to talk my dogs or cat into eating.
Hush my mouth!

Looks like a huge number of wild boar in the USA alone!

Ha ha ha ha ha! I have a friend in Florida who is having a devil of a time with them at his house!
Ah man, dat takes all da fun out of huntin’ me some boar if it be already packaged!
Unfortunately I not eat Taste of da wild cuz my dad is a cheapskate so we eats Nutro.
Puddles
It sounds delish!
Oh, my pups like Taste of the Wild, but it doesn’t like them! No matter how little or lot I added to try to change them to it, the house was filled with smells that could not be stopped. It was like living in a gas testing facility. I guess my babies have very delicate constitutions!
My mama has had real wild boar and she highly recommends it!
The only kibble I eat is “Natures Variety Instinct with raw bites” and only as training treats. It is an excellent kibble that is grain free and not overly processed thus retaining more nutrition.
We purchased Taste of the Wild a couple of times. The price about killed me. Maybe once the teens and their appetites have all moved out. I agree that it’s a great kibble, though.
Cali eats Taste of the Wild and she loves it – not sure how she would feel about wild boar, but I’m sure she would be willing to give it a try
I’ve been using Taste of the Wild since I got Gracie. My friend and I did our own research online and I decided to give it a try, they love it! They get the Sierra mountain formula, dry during the day and mixed with wet at night. Question I’ve had that maybe you can answer. I know you should not change a dogs food at once because it upsets their stomach, like I wouldn’t change from TOTW to Iams. But what about changing within brands? I’ve thought about trying the Pacific stream formula, would I have to do it gradually? Would they take to it without an upset stomach and diarrhea?
Our dogs haven’t had a problem when we’ve switched flavors on them, but it’s still a good idea to mix it for a couple of days if you can. Once in a while, our flavor isn’t available at the store and we’ve had to switch to another one, and the girls have been fine, but it depends on the dog.
Too funny, I just read an article about the growing wild boar population!
How often do you hear the word “boar”, twice in one day? Uh, never, right?
That’s crazy!
We’ve never tried TOTW treats, so this would be well a TREAT!! Thanks for the review
Mmm, I think my dog’s would LOVE to try this. I’m a little afraid they might like it too much and refuse to eat their regular food!
I just LUVS TOTW! That’s what we eat and it’s absolutely DEE-lish! We’re not gonna enter the contest cuz we’re gonna do a review on this, too. But we wish everybuddy else good luck!
Wiggles & Wags,
Mayzie
We have those things. We like fishies but we burp, BOL
Benny & Lily
We’ve had to resort to shredded or cubed cheese to entice Bella during her IPO training. She refuses to track for her dry kibble! It would be so nice to have good quality treats to use instead.
I’m glad that your pups love it so much! Ever since R’s health issues, we’ve been working on figuring out our long-term plan. For R, it’s homemade, but for Shyla, it’s still kibble. Maybe she’d like Taste of the Wild?
Thanks for sharing; I’ll have to check out the kitty treats! Happy WW!
I had hoped to enter the raffle but the entry form requires one to leave a comment yet is not connected to the blog’s Comments function. Oh well. I see others are sharing views on TOTW in general and Wild Boar in particular. In my breed that’s a coat color, but I would offer it for dinner at the right price. In my area it’s around $3/lb, and I can get equivalent formulae for under $2. Our primary feed is Fromm’s/either of the fish varieties. I have one dog that is chicken-allergic; bison and venison are out of our price range; they don’t care for beef or pork; and lamb doesn’t like them. I occasionally feed other brands if I find a really good buy; they are enjoying working their way through ten bags of Nutrisca Salmon/Chickpea I found on sale. The only time I’ve had a serious upset due to changing foods was when they were eating a chicken/rice formula regularly and I tried a grain-free formula while traveling. BIG mistake. You don’t want to hear the details, but I have never left home without the Endosorb again. I hope TOTW works for those who try it!
Wild Boar is really tasty! Thanks for the review, I would be interested in trying it too.
My dogs love taste of the wild and it is one of the highest quality dog foods you can get at that price.
My dogs LOVE ToTW and I bet they would really like to try the new flavor! Great review
Definitely a flavor we’d try, since we don’t do beef or chicken kibble. TotW Pacific Stream is in our kibble bin at the moment.
I have heard of this food, and would like to give it a try!
Love TOTW and so do my rescue fosters!
we feed our dog and cat TOTW but haven’t tried the wild boar yet
My dogs would love to try this!
I can’t wait to try this with my Lab mix! He gets highs and lows very easy, but cannot tolerate the higher protein formulas.
I have been feeding Taste of Wild for some time and my boys love it. I just recently started them on the Wild Boar and so far so good.
Love Taste of the Wild! I bet my dogs would love Wild Boar

I’d love to have this to try with my 2 pups! We just rescued a 10 year old Yorkie that needs the best food out there for some health problems!
I feed TotW to my Great Dane mix, and she loves it! She always has admirers at the dog park who think that her coat is beautiful and shiny, and I think it’s all because of her great diet. She’d love to try the new flavor!
My pup loves the puppy version, but she’s almost ready for the adult formula. I would love to have some samples for her to try!
I hope I win I have picky eaters and would love to try this new formula!!!
My doggies love Taste of the Wild. They love all the flavors and mixing it up each new bag.
My dogs looooove Taste of the Wild – gonna have to let them try this one soon!
I can’t wait until my dog runs out of food, I already decided on TOTW but not sure of what type to buy him! I would love a sample.
I’m super excited for my pups to try the new flavor! My Cane Corso is the pickiest dog I have ever had. He would barely eat before I found your food and now he eats his entire meal every night. I am so happy I found you guys!!!

LOVE the artwork on Taste of the Wild products.
My girl would love to try this new flavor!
We researched TOTW when we brought home our very malnourished rescued Great Dane. We also have a two year old rottweiler, springer mix. We liked what we saw and decided to give the Lamb Mix a try. The Great Dane was 120 lbs when we got him and is fully grown. His coat was horrible, he was sick all the time, had indigestion constantly and went to the bathroom 5-7 times a day. The veterinarian was feeding him IAMS and they couldn’t seem to get his weight up. We started transitioning to the Lamb Mix, both the pup and Great Dane loved the stuff. The rottie has been grain free because she gets sick from corn and other byproducts. We decided to try the Dane on a grain free diet as well. They worshipped the food bowl even when it wasn’t feeding time. Neither of them had any problems transitioning to the new ingredients. Our Dane gained weight and in the past 9 months has filled out and is now a 160 lbs. He no longer has indigestion or gas, has only one stool per day and has a healthy coat. The Dane used to be so thin you could count all of his vertebrae and ribs. Our little dog’s coat is absolutely beautiful. We do have to switch the flavors every once in a while for the Dane because he gets bored, but this wonderful new Southwest flavor sounds right up his alley.
I feed my dog and 2 cats TOTW. My 14 year old cat had a skin condition, and switching her to TOTW completely cleared it up. All of them have less shedding and much healthier coats now. I recommend it to all
My dogs all do great on TOTW products. Can’t wait to try the new formula
We’re huge fans of TOTW and Petflow.com! Would love to try the new flavor.
Sounds delish my pup got started on TOTW Pacific stream with smocked salmon. I’m sure he would love to taste this one too!
my Goldens like High Prairie, so I’m sure they would love the Southwest blend!
My dog loves Taste of the Wild! This is the first time I have heard of Southwest Canyon flavor! I’m sure Dakota will love that flavor, too!
We have 4 pitties and they love it….
It sounds great. I’d love to have my Shibas try it!
I really was hoping a local store would actually carry this on the shelf. I want to try this as it has the highest fiber content of all their varieties.
Our dog loves TOTW. Thanks for sharing your review!
We have two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, they love Taste of the Wild, canned are dry we mix them so they have the best of both worlds. I am looking forward to them trying Southwest Canyon, they love High Prairie and Pacific Stream. I am very thankful to TOTW we had some serious eating issues until we tried TOTW. Now eating is pleasure time around our house never anything left in the bowl since Levi and Maggie started eating TOTW. Thank you Taste of the Wild, we appreciate the great food for our fur babies.
We feed our ‘Sheprador’ Taste of the Wild, but would love to try this new flavor/protein option.
My girls are doing well with this brand…we were hoping to try this new flavor but haven’t been able to find it locally…hopefully I got us entered into the giveaway and can score some for my babies
I have a Great Dane and she has been on TOTW since 8 weeks old. she is now 8 months. I have been mixing the kibble with a small amount of the canned TOTW at each feeding and of course she loves it. There are only 2 puppy kibble s and I can’t wait to try the other flavors to find her favorite. I am always getting comments about her shinny coat. She is coal black with a white swoosh on the back of her neck ( like the Nike swoosh)
We feed our cats and our dog TOTW and I am very excited about this new formula! I can’t wait for it to be out on the shelves. I am a big fan of wild boar myself, so I’m sure my pup will love it.
